In the book "Annie. Around the World by Bicycle" you will read about Annie Kopchovsky, who in 1894 set off on a round-the-world bicycle trip. She left Boston, where her husband and three children remained, and a year later returned to Chicago, having visited Paris, Jerusalem, Bombay, Nagasaki and many other cities. During the trip, Annie had to face many dangers - she was put behind bars, she fell off her bicycle, in India she was mistakenly wounded by a hunter waiting for a tiger, and in China Annie even found herself in a war zone. In addition, Annie had to withstand public censure - riding a bicycle in a long skirt turned out to be very uncomfortable, and as a result, Annie changed into a man's suit, which attracted many angry comments. And in general, society was completely unprepared for the idea that a woman could travel around the world alone, and even fully support herself along the way. But none of these challenges shook her determination to continue her journey and return to America as the first woman to cycle around the globe. Annie's willpower, tenacity, and ability to follow her dream no matter what are truly admirable.
The author of the book, Roberta Balestrucci Fancellu, lives and works in Sardinia. Like Annie, she loves cycling - in fact, it was while riding her bike that she saw Annie Kopchovsky's photo on the cover of the book and became interested in her story. Roberta has several more books published in Italian, including "Stories of Great Men and the Great Women Who Made Them So", in which Roberta again talks about what women are capable of.
The illustrations for "Annie. Around the World by Bicycle" were made by an illustrator working under the pseudonym Luogo Comune (in Italian, this means common place). He lives in Bologna and does not only book illustrations, but also paints the walls of houses all over the world - from Poland and Austria to Spain and Morocco.
