Winner of the 2023 Prix Goncourt.
A gripping romantic story about two people who can neither love nor leave each other.
August 1986, a monastery in northern Italy. For forty years, the protagonist has lived among the monks, looking after her - his latest work, a statue that leaves no one indifferent.
The story of its creation was previously unknown to anyone. On his deathbed, the man recalls the events of his life: his apprenticeship with a cruel, alcoholic sculptor on the Pietra d'Alba plateau, the stronghold of the powerful Orsini family, and his meeting with Viola, the Orsini's only daughter.
Having first met as teenagers, Viola and Mimo would spend the first half of the 20th century side by side and witness the horror of world wars.
Over time, the hero's talent is fully revealed, and now the richest people are eager to get their hands on his works, while Viola tirelessly tries to realize her dreams of an emancipated woman. Both will lose and find each other again and again, sometimes as friends, sometimes as enemies, but they will never give up the bizarre relationship that binds them.
