2020 marks the 80th anniversary of the death of Swedish writer, Nobel Prize laureate in literature, and outstanding storyteller Selma Lagerlöf. The series "Nigma. Selected" includes her most significant work - the fairy tale story "The Amazing Journey of Nils Holgersson with Wild Geese in Sweden" in full translation from Swedish by Lyudmila Yulievna Braude, member of the Union of Writers of the USSR, Honorary Member of the S. Lagerlöf Society, and laureate of the Astrid Lindgren Literary Prize.
The story of Nils' journey was conceived as a geography textbook. With its help, the author dreamed of introducing Swedish children to their native country, its rich nature and interesting history. Being not only a teacher, but also a talented storyteller, Selma Lagerlöf came up with the idea of sending an ordinary boy on a journey across Sweden, but in the company of wild geese. The geese showed the young hero the entire country - from industrial cities to tiny villages, from coastal cliffs to the Lapland tundra. The author was assisted in collecting material by teachers from public schools. In addition, the writer herself repeated Nils' route.
The story of Nils' journey brought Selma Lagerlöf worldwide recognition and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. The book was translated into many languages. In the Soviet Union, it was published in an abridged form, from which many key moments of the story and colorful descriptions were removed. And only in the 1980s, Lyudmila Braude made a full translation from Swedish. It is this version of the text that we will see in the book published by Nigma.
Selma Lagerlöf's story is still relevant today. It touches on one of the most important issues - the relationship between man and nature. By drawing readers' attention to ecology, the author was significantly ahead of her time. She puts important thoughts into the mouths of the main characters - wild geese. It reminds us that we need to treat all living things with care, that animals and birds have the same right to life as humans.
Maria Sutyagina's illustrations take the reader to Sweden at the beginning of the 20th century. Maria is a winner of the Image of the Book award, a participant in art exhibitions, a book graphic artist and illustrator.
