Vladislav Serov is the author of three books included in the Historical Comics series. He consistently, from book to book, creates a chronicle of the exploration of the harsh northern spaces by fearless and desperate pioneers. In his new graphic study, he tells about the catastrophe of the airship Italia, the main characters of this dramatic thriller and their rescuers.
In 1928, the energetic and ambitious Italian engineer and airship builder Umberto Nobile organized an air expedition to the North Pole on the airship Italia, built under his leadership. The team reached the pole, but crashed on the way back. Six people died, nine people, including Nobile, were saved. Fortunately, things fell out of the airship onto the ice floe, without which they would not have survived in these conditions for two months. These were food, a pistol, a tent, and a radio station, which miraculously did not break when it hit the ice.
After the fall, the balloonists were lucky three times. The first time was when a simple Russian guy, a self-taught amateur radio enthusiast from the provinces, picked up a weak SOS signal and transmitted it to Moscow. The second time was when Soviet pilot Boris Chukhnovsky found two still-living crew members who were trying to walk to the shore. The third time was when the Soviet icebreaker Krasin made its way to the inhabitants of the ice floe, who had no strength or hope for rescue.
The book accurately and meticulously reproduces all historical realities, as well as portraits of the heroes of the epic.
The introductory and concluding articles, “To Be the First” and “The Tragic Hero Nobile,” were written by Oleg Bundur and are dedicated to the events preceding the flight of the airship Italia, as well as the subsequent post-flight fate of Umberto Nobile.
