The story was written and the pictures were drawn by artist Judith Kerr. The idea for a book about a tiger came to her after visiting the zoo with her three-year-old daughter. At first, she simply told little Tayce about how a huge tiger suddenly visited the house of another little girl, Sophie. Then her school-age son wanted to hear the story, too; he was tired of boring moralizing books from the school curriculum. Thus, a new little masterpiece was born, called " The Tiger Who Came to Drink Tea ."
