In his new book, Petr Ivanovich Bagin, an artist and writer, continues to introduce children to his favorite topic: the wonderful creations of nature – the animals and birds that inhabit the forests of Russia.

The author tells how to tell a wolf from a dog, a lynx from a wolverine, a white hare from a brown hare by their tracks; how to recognize the inhabitants of a hole or nest by its appearance; how to “read” the marks left on trees by a bear or a tiger, etc. The book contains many interesting stories: wild boars’ bathing places, milking elk cows, bears-fishers, birds with sacks, a badger settlement, otters’ “rides”. The “family” sketches are especially good: mothers with their cubs. Even if the picture stories are not idyllic (a lynx caught a hare, a tiger grabbed a wild boar, an eagle owl aimed its claws at a raccoon), they do not look tragic and will not bring the little reader to tears: the child will understand that the inhabitants of the forest live their own difficult lives and act in accordance with their innate instincts.

The artist's drawings are simple and truthful. In essence, this is a real portrait gallery created by an expert in the characters and habits of animals. The accompanying texts are written with deep respect for the forest, for each animal and bird, in a benevolent tone, with warmth and gentle humor. You can't even call them texts - rather, they are lyrical sketches imbued with surprise, admiration and joy.

The birth of the book was preceded by painstaking research work. The author gratefully acknowledges the works of the remarkable Russian biologists S.I. Ognev, A.N. Formozov, V.S. Pajitnov, N.N. Rukovsky, V.K. Ryabitsev. Their subtle observations, as well as the most interesting facts from the lives of animals and birds, helped the author in creating this book.
