Fly, Gulya, fly!
Fly, Gulya, fly!
The village pigeon Gulya soared freely in the blue sky, breathed clean air, ate his fill and was not going to change anything in his life, until one day a storm threw a lively sparrow into his barn. Chiv, that was the name of his new acquaintance, did not understand how one could vegetate in the village. He praised the delights of city life so much that Gulya decided to go with him to the Megapolis. But nothing good came of it. In the city, Gulya learned that you have to fight for food and the best piece always goes to the one who is stronger. He was almost killed by a wrecking crane, and he almost ended up as dinner for a cat. Seven sparrows brought him home on an old wire hanger, because he himself could not fly. The sparrows nursed the sick pigeon back to health, and they stayed to live with him in an abandoned barn in the middle of fields and meadows, where there are no enemies and the food itself jumps into the beak. So Gulya found friends.
This fairy tale was written and drawn by Bill Peet (1915–2002), a famous American artist, screenwriter, and writer whose books have been published in different languages for over half a century. He worked as an animator at Walt Disney Studios for many years.
Bill Peet is one of those wise and subtle storytellers to whom the world owes good people, because with his stories he knows how to cheerfully and without excessive moralizing awaken good feelings in the reader. Bill Peet gives each character a bright individuality, expressive facial expressions and a special expression, so that the heroes on the pages of his books seem to come to life, like in a real cartoon.
