This book contains poems that Lewis Carroll wrote in his youth to amuse his younger brothers and sisters. Are Herrings and Badgers friends? What happens if you shoot the moon? How can you lose love because of a bun with jam? Will the brave king defeat the one who chomps in the cave? The paradoxical, sly author of the famous fairy tales about Alice is recognizable in each of his early poems.
Most of these works were written before Alice in Wonderland was created. But in some of them, you can already see the outlines of the future masterpiece. Thus, the ballad about the old man "among the remote swamps" turned into the White Knight's song "The Old Man Sitting on the Wall". And "The Fatal Hunt" is the forerunner of "The Hunting of the Snark".
