A chilling story about family, war and hope.

Ten-year-old Alice lives in Belgium while World War I is raging in Europe. At first, Alice and her brothers and sisters don't want to believe that the war will come to their town. Her parents whisper about it, but Alice tries not to think about the bad. But when an army and a line of refugees pass through the town, Alice's parents decide to leave their home. However, it turns out that there is nowhere to run. It makes more sense to return home, although it is becoming dangerous at home. Shells are exploding all around, people are dying, and one morning residents begin to suffocate from an unknown poisonous gas... Alice has a long way to go before she can once again believe in her mother's phrase - that everything will be fine, for sure. Even if not in the way she imagined.

This is a multi-layered story about a sincere and slightly naive girl. From the first page, the reader, both young and old, begins to empathize with the characters. The mood of the book is surprisingly subtly conveyed by the monochrome drawings of Charlotte Pace.

We know much less about the First World War than about other, later wars. But the story, told from a child's perspective, is convincing: all wars destroy lives equally. It is important to maintain faith and hope that everything will be fine. Even if not as described in fairy tales.
