Blinky Bill: The Adventures of the Naughty Koala
This edition of Blinky Bill: The Adventures of the Naughty Koal includes three books by Australian writer and artist Dorothy Wall (1894–1942) about the adventures of a marsupial bear cub. They will appeal to adventure lovers, as well as to all children who are interested in the unique flora and fauna of the Green Continent.
The first book, Blinky Bill, begins with the news that has spread throughout the bush: a long-awaited baby has been born into a respectable family of koalas named Bill. He blinked his eyes so funny – blink-blink – and looked so surprised that his parents decided to name him Blinky. They chose the sweet Angelina Wallaby as his godmother – she will often help Blinky out of trouble, which he regularly gets into because of his irrepressible curiosity. Most koalas are homebodies; to be happy, they need a silver eucalyptus with a convenient forked branch and tender, juicy leaves in abundance. But the inquisitive Blinky can’t sit still, every now and then he comes down from his native tree and goes off to look for adventure – to the horror of his mother, the good-natured Mrs. Bill, the displeasure of his grumpy neighbor Auntie Granty, and the envy of the quiet Snubby, her son. During his travels, Blinky makes friends, learns to see the beauty of nature and comprehend its laws. Gradually, he understands why in the animal world someone eats someone else. But how to explain the reason for cruelty on the part of people? Neither Blinky, nor his mother, nor their friends and neighbors in the bush know.
In the second book, Blinky Bill Grows Up, Blinky, having learned that his mother has decided to send him to school, runs away from home for a long time again. Of course, the world is so huge, the bush is full of wonders, and Blinky is not going to wipe his knickerbockers in Mrs. Magpie's boring school! He gets to a charity fair to help the rabbits that lost their lives in a fire. He wanders onto Mr. Chumkins' farm and barely escapes from there. He meets the cheerful Terry Wagtail, the wise Mr. Owl, the leader of the bulldog ants Brave Bobby, the caustic Hilda and other inhabitants of the bush. He saves the hares from the cunning Belinda Fox, and frees the fox herself from thorns. And in the end, he and his mother are caught by trappers who bring them to the zoo.
In the third book, Blinky Bill and Nutsy, Blinky and his mother escape from the zoo. And Splodge, a real gentleman from the glorious line of giant kangaroos, helps them. They return to their eucalyptus tree, where a baby koala named Nutsy now lives, and together they open a hotel called Second Home.
The trilogy about the adventures of the kitten Blinky Bill was published in 1939 and was immediately loved by readers of all ages, first in Australia and then throughout the world, becoming a classic of children's literature.
