When little Kate and her parents decide to get a dog, they don’t go to a kennel with purebred puppies, but to a shelter for homeless and abandoned animals that they read about in the newspaper. There they find the dog of their dreams – a small, cute, restless Toby, who tirelessly wags his tail and runs around in circles. Mom, Dad and Kate happily take Toby with them, but just before leaving they notice another dog – an old, gray, wide as a suitcase Rose, who also really needs a home. “We would love to take all these dogs, but how?” – sighs Mom. And they leave, looking back at Rose every now and then. At home, everyone enjoys communicating with their new pet Toby, but at night neither Mom, Dad nor Kate can sleep. They all think about Rose. And the next morning... The next morning the whole family, having forgotten about breakfast, goes to the dog shelter again – this time to pick up Rose. In 2002, the book “I Want a Dog!” won first prizes in the category “Best Children’s Picture Book” in Australia and the USA.
