Five-year-old orphan Heidi is sent to live in the Swiss Alps with her unfriendly grandfather. The neighbors pity her, but Heidi soon learns that the outwardly gloomy grandfather has a kind and gentle heart, and she likes her new life more and more. She runs freely through the mountains with goats and her new best friend Peter, picking flowers. But circumstances force her to move to Frankfurt, where there is nothing to breathe because of the smoke and soot, and to keep company with a sick girl who is bored at home alone. Will Heidi return home to the mountains?
