A moose fell from the sky
On Christmas Eve, something incredible happened in the Wagner family. This is what ten-year-old Bertil tells us. He lives with his mother (his parents are divorced) and his incredibly inquisitive older sister Kiki, who also knows how to lie convincingly.
Bertil is a skeptic, he does not believe in Christmas miracles. But when an elk fell into their house, breaking through the roof and ceiling, he had to change his mind.
It turns out that the sleds on which Santa Claus (or Father Christmas) delivers New Year's gifts are tested annually by moose, and only after a thorough check are reindeer harnessed to them. This is the kind of moose that unexpectedly turned out to be the Wagners' guest. And all because the runners of the sled were loose, and he fell into a nosedive.
The appearance of an unusual guest entails a chain of unexpected and sometimes funny events. It is clear that such a guest must be kept away from curious neighbors. This is oh so difficult. Children show remarkable ingenuity in order to keep a secret, especially if it is about their mother's best friend and feminist Gerlinda, or about the farmer and hunter Paninka, who smells game a mile away, not to mention their grandmother, who is terrified of large animals and who came to visit for Christmas.
Mr. Muse the moose is unusually good. He is polite, intelligent, an excellent storyteller and a sensitive friend. By the time he fell into the Wagners' house, the moose had flown around many countries, seen many interesting things and spoke five languages fluently. The sudden appearance of Santa Claus, who came for his moose, plunged Bertil, and the entire Wagner family, into shock and then into despondency. They all wanted the unusual moose to stay with them forever.
But what will Santa Claus be like without Mr. Muse?
The merry Christmas story with a dizzying ending has gone through more than thirty editions, and in 2005 a feature film was made based on it in Germany.
