The Adventures of Tintin. Ottokar's Sceptre
Tintin meets Professor Alambic, a specialist in sigillography, a science that studies seals. His pride is the seal of the King of Sildavia, Ottokar IV. Hoping to add to his collection, the professor is going to this small mountainous country. Tintin decides to go with him as a secretary, but someone tries to stop him in every way and even throws a bomb into his apartment. On the plane, Tintin studies a booklet about Sildavia, its natural beauty and history. His attention is drawn to a curious tradition that dates back to the 14th century under Ottokar IV. The scepter is considered the highest symbol of power there: the king who loses it must abdicate the throne. A chain of incredible events leads Tintin to the idea that a conspiracy is being prepared against His Majesty Muskar XII, the current king of Sildavia. And Tintin does everything possible to thwart it.
The eighth volume of The Adventures of Tintin was published in 1939, a fateful year for Europe and the world (we are talking about the first, black and white version; the color version appeared in 1947). It is not surprising that its atmosphere is permeated with anxiety: the author, like the entire population of tiny Belgium, could not help but be worried about the events in neighboring Germany. By this time, Hergé had already realized that in the current conditions it was better to avoid specifics and choose fictional states as the setting for the action – a technique successfully implemented in The Broken Ear. In place of the opposing South American republics of San Theodoros and Nuevo Rico came two opposing Balkan countries: Sildavia and Borduria.
It is worth noting that the album is also important for the first appearance of the only female character in the series who can be considered significant – the Milanese opera diva Bianca Castafiore, and with her the main musical theme of The Adventures of Tintin – Marguerite’s aria from Charles Gounod’s opera Faust.
