The Adventures of Tintin. The Mysterious Star
One evening, a new star lights up in the sky, very bright. The mysterious star grows and emits heat, which causes the asphalt in the city to melt! Tintin goes to the observatory and finds out that a fiery bolide is rapidly approaching the Earth. According to astronomers' calculations, the collision will occur the next morning, which means that the planet will soon die. However, the end of the world does not happen at the appointed time. Fortunately, the bolide flies past, but a small fragment breaks off from it, which falls into the Arctic Ocean and causes only an earthquake. The "European Foundation for Scientific Research" equips an expedition to find the aerolite. Captain Haddock is entrusted with command of the expedition ship "Aurora". Reporter Tintin goes from the press.
The publication of the black-and-white version of the 10th volume of The Adventures of Tintin in the Brussels newspaper Le Soir began in October 1941 and ended in May 1942. This is the first story in the series, the album version of which was immediately published, firstly, in color, and secondly, in the now classic 62-page format. The Mysterious Star appeared at a difficult time for Belgium and the whole world, which could not help but affect its atmosphere, especially in the plot: the expectation of the end of the world fully corresponded to the mood of the majority. According to researchers, Tintin had never been so sincerely confused and scared as on the first pages of this album. Which can be fully attributed to its author: neither before nor after Hergé faced so many accusations of a political nature, which forced him to justify himself almost until the end of his life. The situation was partly smoothed over by changes (pointed, not affecting the plot as a whole) made to the first (1943) and second (1954) album versions, the latter of which became canonical.
