On the night of the annual autumn equinox festival, residents of a small town gather to float paper lanterns down the river. Legend has it that once out of sight, the lanterns rise up to the Milky Way and turn into sparkling stars, but is that true?
This year, Ben and his classmates plan to find out what's really going on with the flashlights, and to ensure their mission is a success, they make a pact consisting of two simple rules: don't turn back and don't look back.
They plan to follow the lanterns along the riverbank until they discover the truth, but it doesn't take long before the pact is broken by everyone except Ben and (to his disappointment) Nathaniel, a boy no one wants to be friends with.
Together, Ben and Nathaniel travel further than anyone has ever gone before, along a winding road full of magic, wonder, and unexpected friendship.
