Vladimir Odoevsky knew philosophy, mathematics, physics, chemistry well, wrote music, invented musical instruments, collected and studied Russian folk songs. He also wrote wonderful stories and fairy tales for children.

The fairy tale "Moroz Ivanovich" is rightfully considered one of the best works of V. Odoevsky. Despite the fact that the fairy tale was created almost 200 years ago, it is still loved by young readers.

In terms of plot and characters, this is a variation on the theme of the Russian folk tale "Morozko".

In one house lived two girls - the Needlewoman and the Lazy Girl. The Needlewoman was a smart girl: she got up early and immediately got down to work: she stoked the stove, kneaded dough, swept the hut, fed the rooster, went to the well for water. And the Lazy Girl lay in bed, stretching. She would get up, jump, and then sit by the window to count the flies: how many flew in and how many flew away. And the Needlewoman also knitted stockings, cut and sewed shirts, and sang handicraft songs.

In search of a bucket that had fallen into a well, the Needlewoman found herself in the domain of Moroz Ivanovich. For three days, she skillfully and conscientiously managed his household, for which she received a worthy reward. The Lazy Woman envied the Needlewoman's success and went to Moroz Ivanovich by the same difficult path - through the well. But she did not know how to do anything, and her character was not such as to help others. Therefore, the reward received by the Lazy Woman turned out to be a piece of ice, which the girl mistook for a silver ingot. As is the work, so is the reward.

The fairy tale is also good because, in addition to the fascinating, moderately instructive plot, it gives the concepts of the change of seasons, an idea of peasant labor, and attention to the poor, especially on frosty winter days. And the process of water purification by the Needlewoman is so educational that it can be successfully reproduced at home.

The book is beautifully illustrated by the master of Soviet children's illustration, Vladimir Konashevich.
