The Mistress of the Copper Mountain

The Gumyoshki mine, where copper ore had been mined for the nearby Polevskoy plant since the 18th century, was famous for its various wonders. And for good reason: the power here belonged to the Mistress of the Copper Mountain. She could take on different forms: she would turn into a lizard or appear as a laughing girl, or enter a house as a wanderer or receive guests in her kingdom as an imperious sovereign. But in any form, the Mistress loved to "practice wisdom over a person": she would give a difficult task - and the clerk would severely punish the worker; she would beckon with a mysterious stone flower - and the master would leave for her mountain forever.

And in the mountain, "the rooms are like big ones... and their walls are different. Sometimes they are all green, sometimes yellow with golden specks. On which there are copper flowers again. There are also blue ones, azure ones. In a word, it is decorated beyond words." This beauty of the Ural land, the incredible wealth of the Ural Mountains, was conveyed with love and deep knowledge of the nature of stone by the artist Vyacheslav Nazaruk, who devoted several years to illustrating the most famous tales of Pavel Bazhov.
