Despite the fact that almost 40 years have passed since the year of creation (1985), Kalinovsky's illustrations for Bulgakov's book are considered some of the best. Gennady Kalinovsky (1929-2006) considered the illustrations for the novel The Master and Margarita to be one of his most successful projects. The fate of this work in many ways resembles the fate of Bulgakov's manuscripts: the drawings were published in the book only 15 years after the date of creation, in 2001, and in 2002 the artist received the Grand Prix "Book of the Year" for them. Gennady Kalinovsky managed to "crack the visual code" of the novel in an amazing way, where the mystery, dating back to Christian legends, bohemian Moscow life and scenes with characters who embody pure evil, were combined surprisingly harmoniously.
