The Fox and the Wolf

All over the world there are so-called “fox tales” that tell of a sneaky, cunning animal that gains the upper hand over stronger animals – the wolf and the bear.
In the Russian folk tale "The Fox and the Wolf," the red-haired rogue easily deceives a simpleton and steals his fish; teaches a stupid wolf to catch fish in an ice hole with his tail; gets dirty in a dough bowl, and makes the wolf, who suffered from her beatings, carry her on his back. Everything is like in life: the experienced manipulator Fox is not averse to profiting at the expense of gullible and ignorant characters.
It is not surprising that some expressions from this tale have become catchphrases:
"Freeze, freeze, wolf's tail";
"The beaten one carries the unbeaten one."
Thanks to the fairy tale, the child understands: a selfish invention, no matter how implausible and unbelievable it may seem (catch a fish with your tail!), will always find a fool who will believe it. With the help of adults, the child will make another useful conclusion: in difficult life situations, it is not strength that helps, but ingenuity and resourcefulness.
The book's illustrator, the wonderful artist Nikolai Ustinov, has a subtle understanding of the text and a special perception of the child's world. His memorable drawings form a single whole with the plot of the fairy tale, they awaken the child's imagination, inviting him to look at and read the book again and again.
