Long winter

The story “The Long Winter”, like all the books in the autobiographical series by American writer Laura Ingalls Wilder, is a life lesson: don’t give up, don’t give up, believe and hope!

The main character, Laura, is fourteen. Her large family is once again being tested. Cold and hunger are their main enemies. And a considerable sum of money is needed so that Mary, Laura's older sister, can study at a college for the blind. And Laura gets a job to help her sister. She has to do something she doesn't like - sewing, but she, like all the Ingalls, does not complain, but simply does what she considers her duty.

An impressive part of the book is dedicated to the young and desperate Almanzo Wilder (the future husband of Laura Ingalls), who, risking his life, in frost and blizzard, through deep off-road, goes with a friend for provisions, gets several sacks of wheat and thereby saves Laura's family and their neighbors from imminent death.

Love and care for each other help the family overcome all difficulties. And, of course, dad Charles, a man of extraordinary fortitude and strength of spirit, is able to turn the whole world upside down for the sake of the happiness of his beloved wife and daughters.

Thanks to the authentic description of everyday life - the smell of coffee, pumpkin pie, milk frozen in a bucket, Christmas presents that did not reach the Ingalls until May - the family's daily life on the move is exciting and makes the reader want to compare his own teenage years with Laura's.
