An excerpt from a poem by Ivan Surikov (1841-1880) is familiar to everyone from school years. Surprisingly, it was this very fame that played a cruel joke on the work: the first stanzas began to be perceived as an independent work about a funny incident with a village boy - he rolled down a hill and tumbled into the snow to the amusement of his friends.
But Surikov's poem is much deeper and more subtle. It is about the pure and joyful world of childhood. It is about the now almost lost world of the Russian village. It is about the world of fairy tales, the joyful and free childhood dream.
All these worlds are opened for the little reader with love and inspiration in his illustrations by the wonderful St. Petersburg artist Mikhail Bychkov.
