Nominated for the Booker Prize.
Full of feelings, tenderness, and gentle irony, this novel about a family spans more than a decade. Young rebel Rose has gone missing, and her younger sister Clara spends her days at the window, hoping to see her return. The girl watches as an unfamiliar man enters the neighboring house. Clara knows very well that the lonely Elizabeth, who is currently in hospital, lives in the house. Clara promised her neighbor to look after the house, and most importantly, the remaining tenant, the cat Moses. The story, told from three points of view: Clara, Elizabeth, and Lyme, who has moved into the house, shifts the focus from one character to another, revealing new layers of dramatic events, past and present, love, bitterness, affection, and alienation. A wonderfully written, slightly disturbing, and very humane novel that has no raging passions, but many sincere and deep feelings.
