Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Sonnets. Romeo and Juliet

Savva Brodsky, an architect by profession, illustrated several dozen books. And he often approached graphics as an architect - he built, constructed the artistic space of the printed publication itself. Illustrating Shakespeare in the early 1980s, Brodsky staged a real book performance. The characters line up in mise-en-scènes against the backdrop of the vaults of the Danish kings' castle or an Italian Renaissance city receding into the distance. "The audience can see all the characters at once, but some of them come to the fore, in a circle outlined by light, while others smoothly recede into the distance... While working on this book, I felt like a theater director in some way," the artist recalled. The illustrations-decorations rhythmically replace each other: the area in front of the castle is transformed into a portrait gallery, and then into a throne room; the city streets turn into the interior of a cathedral, and later turn into the heroine's bedroom... And it seems natural that the series of plot twists is preceded by a visual image of Shakespeare's famous saying: "All the world's a stage, and the men and women but players."
