Happy New Year

Alf Prøysen - a Norwegian writer, poet, composer - wrote a great many songs, poems and fairy tales for children. The fairy tale in verse "Merry New Year" is a cozy fairy-tale world of a friendly family of mice who live in a hole in the attic.
Their New Year's food is -
Seven crumbs from cutlets,
And for those who love sweets -
candy wrapper
But a modest holiday table is no reason to be sad. The mice are having fun from the heart: Let's give each other tails,
And one, two, three - forward!

This kind and cheerful fairy tale is easy to read and quickly remembered. It is also unusually well illustrated by the brilliant artist Vladimir Suteev. The mouse dwelling and family relationships are drawn with great love for detail: a general pre-holiday cleaning, skipping ropes, bows, mouse toys on a string, a quarrel over a piece of sausage, pants, dresses and T-shirts of numerous mouse children hung up after washing, a chamber pot made of a nut shell, caring mouse parents and a wise mouse grandmother sitting on a rocking potato, and many, many other cute details of mouse life.
