You and I promised not to show our letters to anyone! And now they will be published as a separate book. It is scary to think what Sarah, aged 13, has decided to do. Now anyone will be able to read what used to be only between us. I would like to know how you would feel about this. You no longer have the opportunity to cross out anything or edit anything. As they used to say at our Bible school in Orsay: let's drag everything out into the light!"
This amazing correspondence began in 1971, when Astrid Lindgren was 63 years old and Sara Jungkrantz was 12. But the 50-year age difference did not hinder their friendship and frank conversations about life, love, freedom and God. The epistolary dialogue, dying down and resuming, ceased only with the writer's death in 2002.
In these letters we get to know the great writer from an unknown side, and also understand how important it is for a teenager to be understood and heard.
