"Gargantua and Pantagruel" is one of the greatest works of Renaissance literature. For almost five hundred years, François Rabelais's satirical novel about the adventures of giant gluttons has occupied a place of honor in the library of every self-respecting bookworm. Today, as before, people read it, laugh until they cry, marvel, and ponder the lines of this immortal creation, following the author's advice: "You must be wise to smell, sense, and appreciate these excellent, these delicious books..."
This edition presents the complete text of the novel with illustrations by the outstanding French artist Gustave Doré (1832–1883), as well as rare engravings and drawings by Bernard Piccard (1673–1733), Louis Chalon (1866–1915) and William Robinson (1872–1944).

The first volume included the first three books. The second volume included the last two books.
